L.V. Bailey
In 1976 L.V. Bailey ended a 30-year career with the Baytown Fire Department. This was a career of total dedication, being on call 24 hours a day.
Mr. Bailey, was born in Polk County on May 24, 1918. He lived there through his childhood and married Velma K. Collins in 1938. They moved to Baytown in 1940.
He first worked for Brown & Root before serving in the Navy from 1943 to 1946.
Upon his return to Baytown, he was employed by the Goose Creek Fire Department. It was later consolidated and became the City of Baytown Fire Department.
L.V. also was an instructor for Texas A & M Fire School from 1958 to 1977.
Bailey was first in everything—the first driver, the first captain and the first assistant fire chief in the fire department. He and his family lived upstairs at Fire Station No.
3 for 9 years. He was appointed as fire chief after the death of Fire Chief Art Lintleman. He resigned as chief in 1970 and served as acting fire chief for 2 years. In 1972, he again became Fire Chief until his retirement in 1976.
People around the firehouse used to say that he could hear the fire phone ring even when he was miles away and swear it was the gospel truth. He was the tease of the department. He always enjoyed playing a good joke or telling a good story. One of his favorites was about a time while fighting a fire in a two-story smoke-filled building, he stepped through the floor, falling to the ground level. There was so much smoke he couldn't see and didn't know the second story floor had already fallen through. Bailey was okay, but he lost his badge. They could never find it among the debris. Two years later, someone walked into the station with the badge they had found.
Bailey spent 30 years helping make his community a safer place, and he can be described as a good and faithful servant.
He was married to Velma Collins Bailey for 70 years. He has one daughter, Dorothy Parkinson, two grand-daughters, Steffani Parkinson Machicek and her husband Clarence, Stacey Parkinson Nethery and her husband Bryan. He also has five great grandchildren. Kristen Machicek Warford and her husband Brandon, Kandace Machicek Ritter and her husband Garrett, Taylor Nethery and his wife Ashley, Collin Nethery and Cody Nethery. Five great great-grandchildren, Kylah Warford, Kinsley Warford, Levi Ritter, Aria Ritter and Opal Ritter.
Mr. Bailey was a member of Holly Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon. He was always willing to help someone in need. He was a very loving and giving man.
He loved to hunt. His favorite hunting grounds were Colorado and Wyoming. Fishing was always a second love. He had a stocked catfish pond on his property and always had fish in the freezer.
Preceding him in death were his wife, Velma Collins Bailey; Parents Valco "Bob" Bailey and Melvira Emily Richardson Bailey; Granddaughter, Tina Lee Parkinson; Siblings, Gladys Warren, Mamie Collins, Laura Rhodes and Annice Walters Jones.
Surviving siblings are L. C. Bailey of Silsbee and T. H. Bailey and wife Mary Beth of Segno. He is also survived by a large number of nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin at 11:00 A.M. on Wednesday, November 22, 2017 with a Celebration of L.V.’s Life beginning at 12 noon at Holly Grove Baptist Church 494 County Line Rd. South, Livingston, Texas with Pastors Denton Maze and Billy Brackin presiding. Baytown City Fire Department providing full honor guards at Holly Grove Cemetery.
