Lois Franklin Hickman Parrish was born on June 11, 1917 in Glenmore, Rapides Parish, Louisiana and passed from this life on January 18, 2012. She was the eighth child born to Charles Houston and Miriam Elizabeth Smith Hickman. During the early years of the Depression, the Hickman families moved to Texas and were residing in Ollie when Lois met her future husband. Shine Parrish and Lois were married on October 15, 1932 in Livingston, Texas by Reverend W. B. Wadsworth.
Mrs. Parrish attended school at Center Grove for several years before her marriage, and lived for the rest of her life in the Center Grove community where she and her husband farmed and raised their five children. She was a member of the Leggett Baptist Church, but over the years had attended church at Center Grove, Hortense, and Jones Prairie Baptist Church.
For over twentytwo years, Mrs. Parrish was a fixture behind the counter of Freemans Store at Leggett until the store closed in 1973. She retired from working outside her home and spent her time raising a garden, fishing and quilting. Several of her quilts were awarded ribbons during the years of the Pinecone Festival Quilting Contests. Her ability with a needle and thread did not stop with a quilt, as several of her grandsons can testify to her ability to patch a pair of blue jeans.
Mrs. Parrish was happiest when she could sit on the banks of the pond at her home to fish, especially with any of the grandchildren or greatgrandchildren that happened to be visiting.
Mrs. Parrish was preceded in death by her husband, Shine in 2001, by a daughter, Wilma LaVerne Parrish Thompson, soninlaw, Joe B. Willson, and two grandchildren, Joel Bradford Willson and Tammy Lee Parrish. She was also preceded in death by eight of her nine siblings, Alice Hickman, Juanita Smith, Cinderella Melder, John Hickman, Mary Nell Crawford, Charles Leslie Hickman, W. A. Hickman, and Benny Hickman.
Lois Parrish is survived by three daughters, Dollie Mae Willson, Marlene Boatman and husband, Herman, all of Center Grove, Barbara Preston and husband, Willis of Lindale, and her son Hulon Parrish and wife, Linda of Center Grove. She is also survived by her soninlaw, Ector Thompson of Center Grove and her youngest sister, Edith House of Cedar Park, Texas. Mrs. Parrish has fourteen surviving grandchildren, thirtyone greatgrandchildren, and twentyeight greatgreat grandchildren. Pall bearers will be grandchildren and greatgrandchildren.
A visitation will be held on Friday, January 20, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Pace Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Saturday, January 21, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at Center Grove Cemetery. To sign the online guestbook, please go to pacefuneral.com
