Deacon Jose Angel Vitela, age 74, of Moscow, Texas, born to Alfredo and Maria (Villareal) Vitela, in Del Rio, Texas on July 25, 1943, passed away September,17, 2017.
He was a Deacon at the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Livingston, Texas and at the San Martin De Porres Mission in Corrigan, Texas. Jose was an ordained deacon for 26 years which he loved every single moment. At one point in his ministry, God called upon him to also be a prison chaplain. He served at Ellis Unit in Huntsville, Texas, Gibbs Unit in Woodville, Texas, and ended most recently as the head chaplain at Polunsky Unit in Livingston, Texas. Besides his family, being a deacon and a chaplain was what he considered to be his biggest blessing from God.
Jose is survived by; his loving wife of 53 years, Sylvia Vitela; son, Robert Vitela & wife, Melissa; daughter, Rebecca Vitela Nava & husband, Robert; brothers, Alfredo Vitela Jr., Amadeo Vitela & wife, Gayle; grandchildren, Megan Vitela, Gilbert Nava, Angela Nava, Samantha Nava; great grandchild, Camilla Vitela; and numerous other relatives and a host of friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marta Conyers; sister-in-law, Patricia A Vitela
Visitation will be held on Friday, September 22, 2017 at the San Martin De Porres in Corrigan, Texas from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. with Rosary starting at 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at St. Joseph Church in Livingston, Texas, with Bishop Curtis Guillory, Father Clifton Labbe, S.V.D, Father Joseph C. Nguyen, and Deacon Richard Lopez officiating. Internment to follow at the Union Springs Cemetery in Corrigan, Texas.
