John McKinnie Hawkins, known to some as Hawk, passed away on December 4, 2014 in Onalaska, TX. He was preceded in death by parents Earle Lindsey Hawkins and Margaret McKinnie Hawkins. John was a beloved husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather. He was born as an only child in Jackson, Tennessee on May 10, 1933. He attended Lambuth College there in Jackson where he met his lifelong love of 60 years, Jo Dean Hufstedler and they married on September 12, 1954. They have 4 children. He was a Sargent in the U.S. Army serving our country from 1953 to 1955. Mr. Hawkins was 81 years of age and survived by his loving wife, Jo Dean Hawkins, His Sons: Steve Hawkins wife Barbara, Joe Hawkins wife Lea, Richard Hawkins daughter, Sybil Hawkins McElyea husband Kevin. He has 7 Grandchildren: Michelle McElyea Cheatham husband Brian, Tara McElyea Porfirio husband Paul, Lauren McElyea, Gabi Hawkins Hamilton husband Jonathan, Annie Hawkins Hames husband Eric, Stefan Hawkins, and Collin Hawkins. He has 6 Great Grandchildren: Dysen Meador, Brayden and Austin Cheatham, Madeline Porfirio, Zaiden McElyea and Ethan Hames. John joined General GasAmoco Oil Company in Baton Rouge in 1955 as a LP Gas Broker after an Honorable discharge from the US Army. He worked at Xcel and then later became President of Southwestern Liquids Inc. until retirement. His love was shared in music on the Steel Guitar where he met many friends along the path. His other fun hobbies were fishing, hunting and enjoying time with his family. Mr. Hawkins immediate family would be pleased to have you join us in a celebration of his life.
In lieu of floral tributes, the family asks that you consider memorial contributions in Johns name to First United Methodist Church in Livingston, TX Helping Hands, or a Charity of your choice. Services will be held at First United Methodist Church in Livingston, Texas on Monday, Dec. 8, 2014 at 2PM. Officiating will be Reverend James Frazier and Reverend Steve Woody.
